The Prakasam Barrage is constructed across Krishna River in Vijayawada, linking the districts of Krishna and Guntur.

The dam originated from the idea of Captain Buckel in 1798 before it further took forward by Captain Best and Captain Lake in 1830 and and 1841 rspectively

Major Cotton approved the dam, the dam was further given a green signal by the board of Directors of East India Company on January 5, 1850. The construction started in the year 1852 and was completed three years later in 1855

The bridge was built later on and named after Sri Tanguturi Prakasam, the first Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh. The dam irrigates over 1.2 Million acres of land, and is the first major irrigation project of South India.

The construction of barrage accrued the following benefits.

Assured water supply to the increased ayacut of 13.00 Lakh acres in Krishna, Guntur 
and Prakasam districts.

Transplantation could be speeded up and completed early, especially
 in the tail end submersible lands.

Crops could be saved from damage due to deleterious submersion.
Food grains worth  2500 crores produced every year.  4.    
Besides irrigating vast tracts of farmland, the dam provides a spectacular view of the lake and has become a major tourist attraction of Vijayawada.
      Best time to visit  is August to December to see the flow of Krishna River. 
      In summer cool breeze releives the passerbys.
In rainy days people throng to see the river flow when crest gates are lifted.
The view of the river/bride from kanakadurga temple is feast to watch.Other places to see in Vijayawada include Kanaka Durga Temple ,Undavalli Caves, kondapalli Fort,  Gandhi Hill, Mangalagiri Panakala swamy, Gunadala Church, Bhavani Islands to name a few.

Gandhi Hill is considered as a monument of Indian Independence struggle and pays homage to Father of the nationMahatma Gandhi. The Gandhi Hill Memorial has a stone slab with inscriptions of Gandhi quotations.
After independence it was decided by Government to establish Gandhi Memorial places.
 Famous sulputure, Sri Nandalal Bose  made this Memorial Sthupam.
On 6 October 1968, a stupa 52 ft (16 m) tall was unveiled by former President of India Dr.Zakir Hussain
Sri KL Rao who contributed a lot for this venture established library on the Hills.
Lecture Hall also consrtucted.
There used to be a toy train running around the stupa which used  to give clear view of Vijayawada. .
The planiterium at the Hill is unique.
Gandhijis 11 pledges are seen on the Sthupa.
1.Non – Voilence, 2.Truth  3. Brahmacharya 4. Fearlessness   5. Swadeshi 6. Removal of  untouchibility 7. Dignity of labour.8. Control of senses .9. Astheyam 10. Aparigraham 11.    Equality of all religions,.
Other places to see in Vijayawada include Kanaka Durga Temple , Prakasam Barrage, Undavalli Caves, kondapalli Fort, Mangalagiri Panakala swamy, Gunadala Church, Bhavani Islands to name a few.

Since Gandhi Hill stands adjoining the  Vijayawada Railway Station. Which means commutation and infrastructure are in place. Continuous Efforts can leading it  to developing into big Tourist Spot.
