Srisailam Mallikajuna Swamy Temple is one of the 12
Jyotirlingas and one of the most famous
temples in India. According to pre
historic studies the habitation history of Srisailam goes back to about
30000 to 40000 years.
Sri Mallikarjuna Swamy Temple of Srisalam is
situated on the picturesque Nallamala Hills on the banks of Krishna River 212 km from Hyderabad, 179 Km from Kurnool in Andhra Pradesh, India. It was earlier called as srigiri. Godess Bramaramba Temple is also located in the
same complex, It is considered to be one of the Eighteen #Shaktipeethas,
Bramarambha is a fierce deity at this place.
The sathavahanas, the pallavas, the Vishnukundis, the
Chalukyas, the Chalukyas, the kakatiyas, the Reddy kings, the
Vijayanagara Emperors, and Chatrapati Shivaji were the emperors who worshiped God Mallikarjuna Swamy.
The Mallikarjuna Linga is accessible to each and
every devotee and anybody can go into the sanctum of Mallikarjuna, touch him
and perform abhishekam and Archana himself to the recitation by Archakas without
caste or creed or religion.
According to legend Chandravathi princess of of Chandra Gupta patana , situated near Srisailam on the banks of the Krishna River has gone up the Hill , one day she found that one of the cows standing above a natural rock formation resembling the Shivalanga and shedding its milk over it. In dream the princess was informed that the stone was self manifested Linga of Lord Mallikarjuna and took worshipping to it. The story is mentiond in the Skanda Purana. The prakara wall , sculptures depict this story.
